1.기수(Cardinal Numeral)와 서수(Ordinal Numeral)

(1) 기수(Cardinal Numeral)

1 ... one, 2 ... two, 3 ... three, 4 ... four, 5 ... five,

6 ... six, 7 ... seven, 8 ... eight, 9 ... nine, 10 ... ten,

11 ... eleven, 12 ... twelve, 13 ...thirteen, 14 ... fourteen,

100(백) - a/one hundred (0이 두 개)

1,000,000(백만) - a/one million (0이 6개, 백만을 기본으로 새로 시작)

10,000,000(천만) - ten million (0이 7개, 백만을 기본으로 끊어 읽음)

100,000,000(억) - a/one hundred million (0이 8개, 역시 백만을 기본으로 함)

1,000,000,000(십억) - a/one billion (0이 9개, 여기서부터는 십억이 기본)

10,000,000,000(백억) - ten billion (0이 10개, 역시 십억이 기본)

100,000,000,000(천억) - a/one hundred billion (0이 11개, 십억이 기본)

1,000,000,000,000(조) - a/one trillion (0이 12개, 조가 기본)

※ 기수에서100 이상의 수는 hundred 다음에 and를 넣어 읽는 것이 보통이나 (영국 영어),

미국 영어에서는 생략하는 경우가 많다.

※ 위의 4,196은 forty-one hundred and ninety-six로 읽어도 된다.

※ 위의 9,003의 경우, 100단위의 숫자가 0일 때는 and를 생략할 수 없다.

※ 백의 자리에는 hundred를, 천의 자리에는 thousand를,

백만의 자리에는 million을 붙여 읽되, 백 단위로 세 자리씩 끊어 읽는다.

3. 연도

1991 → nineteen ninety-one

1400 → fourteen hundred

1007 → one thousand and seven

313 → three thirteen

101 → one hundred and one

393 B.C. → three ninety-three B.C. (기원전 393년)

1990's → the nineteen nineties (1990년대)

※ 연도는 일반적으로 끝에서 두 자리씩 끊어 읽는다.

※ 위의 1991, 313은 일반 숫자처럼 읽어도 된다.

1999년 : nineteen ninety-nine 1900년 : nineteen hundred

1900s(1900년대) : nineteen hundreds 1960s(1960년대) : nineteen sixties

'90s(90년대) : nineties 1905년 : nineteen 0 five (0은 흔히 o로 읽는다.)

2000년 :the year two thousand (2000이라고만 하면 이상하니까 the year를 앞에 붙임)

2005년 : (the year) two thousand five

B.C. = 기원전(Before Christ)

A.D. = 서기(Anno Domini 라틴어로 in the year of the Lord라는 뜻.

서기 1000년 이후부턴 A.D.를 쓰지 않는 것이 보통임)

4. 날짜

날짜(date)는 서수로 읽기도 하고 기수로 읽기도 한다.

8월 15일 → ① (표기) 15 August 15th August 15th of August

(읽기) the fifteenth of August

② (표기) August 15

(읽기) August fifteen August the fifteenth

③ (표기) August 15th

(읽기) August the fifteenth

※ 연월일을 나타내는 경우 미국식과 영국식에 차이가 있다.

1950년 6월 25일

(미국식) June (the) twenty-five, nineteen fifty

(영국식) The twenty-fifth of June, nineteen fifty

(미국식) June the 25th 1950 → <월/일/년>의 순서로

(영국식) the 25th June 1950 → <일/월/년>의 순서로

1970년 1월 8일은 다음과 같이 표기할 수 있다.

① January 8, 1970 (8 January, 1970)

② January 8th, 1970 (8th January, 1970)

③ Jan. 8, 1970 (8 Jan. 1970)

④ 01/08/1970 (영국 : 08/01/1970)

5. 시각

시각을 나타내는 법에는 시간과 분을 각각 기수로 읽는 법과

past(after)나 to(before,of)를 사용해서 읽는 법이 있다.

8:15 ① eight fifteen

② a quarter past(after) eight

9:30 ① nine thirty

② half past(after) nine

10:45 ① ten forty-five

② a quarter to(before,of) eleven

11:00 a.m. → eleven(o'clock) [ei m]

※ ②와 같이 읽는 경우

"∼분 지나서"의 의미로 past는 영국에서, after는 미국에서,

"∼분 전"의 의미로 to는 영국에서, before와 of는 미국에서 쓰인다.

12 : 15 - a quarter after twelve (미국) / a quarter past twelve (영국)

11 : 45 - a quarter of/before twelve (미국) / a quarter to twelve (영국)

※ 뒤에 "∼분"이 붙으면 o'clock을 사용하지 않는다.

※ 오전 a.m.[ei m], 오후 p.m.[p : m]

a.m.(A.M.) = ante meridiem = before noon

p.m.(P.M.) = post meridiem = after noon

8. 분수(common faction)

분수를 읽을 때는 분자는 기수로, 분모는 서수로 읽으며,

분자가 2이상이면 분모에 복수형 어미 -s를 붙여 읽는다.

1/2 → a half ( one-half )

1/3 → one-third( a third)

1/4 → a quarter ( one-fourth )

1/8 → an eighth ( one-eighth )

2/5 : two fifths

3/4 three-fourths ( three quarters )

1/1000 : one thousandth (분자가 단수이니까 분모에 s를 안붙임)

3/900 : three nine-hundredths

36/55 : thirty-six fifty-fifths

3 +4/5 → three and four-fifths

152/287 → one hundred and fifty-two over two hundred and eighty-seven

※ 대분수는 정수와 분수 사이에 and를 두어 읽으면 된다.

※ 위의 와 같이 복잡한 분수(두 자리수 이상-10단위 이상)는 분자와 분모 사이에

over[by]를 쓰고 분자, 분모 모두를 기수로 읽는다.

9. 소수(decimal fraction) : 소수를 읽을 때는 ‘점’을 point라고 읽은 뒤

소수점 이하를 낱개의 숫자로 읽으면 된다.

소수점 : decimal point

소수자리 : decimal place

소수 둘째 자리 : two decimal places

소수 셋째 자리 : three decimal places

0.95 : (zero) point nine five

0.01 : (zero) point o one

0.34567 : zero point three four five six seven

3.14159 → three point one four one five nine

0.05 → point zero five [ point oh five ]

0.068 → nought point nought six eight

17.43 → seventeen point four three

※ 소수점은 point로 읽는다.

※ 소수점까지는 보통 기수로 읽으며, 소수점 이하는 한 자씩 읽는다.

10. 이상/이하 , 초과/미만

5이상 : 5 or more, 5 or above, 5 and over

5이하 : 5 and under, 5 or less, 5 or below

5초과 : more than 5, over 5, above 5, exceeding 5, in excess of 5

5까지(5포함) : up to 5

5미만 : under 5, below 5, less than 5

5부터(5포함) : at or after 5(5시부터), on or after 5(5일부터)

11. 비율 : They passed the laws by 6 : 3. (six to three)

12. 배수

두 배 : twice / double

세 배 : three times / three-fold / triple

네 배 : four times / four-fold / quadruple

다섯 배 : five times / five-fold

13. 수식

+ : and(간단한 숫자) 혹은 plus(격식을 갖출 때)

- : from(간단한 숫자), take away 혹은 minus(격식)

= : is/are/leaves 혹은 equals(격식)

3+5=8 : three and five is(makes) eight / three plus five is(equals) eight

6+9=? → What's six and nine?

8-5=3 : five from eight is(leaves) three /

eight take away five leaves three / Eight minus three equal(s) five.
